My 10-Step Skincare Routine: Part I
Did anyone else grow up getting yelled at for falling asleep with makeup on?
I spent my late teens and early twenties wiping off my raccoon eyes, hoping that my mom wouldn’t catch me. She would loudly yell my name and tell me to take care of my skin to which I would respond with a snarky, “YEAH, yeah.” I never put quite an importance on skincare, mostly because I never had any issues. I have no prepubescent horror stories about acne, really no issues…until my mid-twenties.
I began battling some inflammatory issues, one of which was eczema. At the time, I was adhering to a primal diet, in hopes of healing from the inside-out. That’s when I heard about oil cleansing. It seemed nonsensical. Oil to clean oil?! What?!
How does the oil cleansing work?
The basic concept of this skin care and cleansing method is that the oil used to massage your skin will dissolve the oil that has hardened with impurities and found itself stuck in your pores. The steam will open your pores, allowing the oil to be easily removed. Should you need it, the smallest drop of the same oil formula patted over damp skin will provide the necessary lubrication to keep your skin from over-compensating in oil production.
More on the oil cleansing method here.
I began to notice changes in my skin within days. Flash forward two years later. A little older, a lot more sun, a bit more damage. After thru-hiking, my skin took a beating. Six months of very little cleansing, improper nutrition, no moisturizing, a bout of hormonal breakouts and too many days spent without sunscreen. I continued with my oil cleansing routine, but realized that I needed to address a handful of new issues. I thought back to the countless times my former coworker raved about Korean Skincare, so I began to research.
