Drive to Rowena Crest Viewpoint
Perhaps one of Oregon’s most photographed roads, Rowena Crest is an iconic view uniquely shaped like a horseshoe.
When I first moved to Portland in 2014, I placed Rowena Crest Viewpoint on a long list of must see places. I decided to make a dent in that list prior beginning my Appalachian Trail thru-hike. Without doing much research I set off to find this popularly photographed vista. There are different ways of accessing Rowena Crest, the unforgiving winter weather made my choice easy—use a car.
Rowena Crest is on the Oregon side of the Columbia River and is part of the Rowena Gap basalt flows. The Historic Columbia River Highway passes over Rowena Crest, and contains an impressive loop in the eastern side.
